How Can I Boost My Thyroid Naturally?
In order to support low thyroid function naturally, you have to use a combination of natural thyroid healing principles:
1. Thyroid supporting diet principles
2. Specific vitamins, minerals, and herbs
3. Thyroid replacement therapy that mimics the body's natural production of thyroid hormones.
4. Natural hormonal support supplements that protect against stress and hormonal aging.
My diet and health principles follow these holistic guidelines for treating hypothyroidism and hormonal imbalances naturally. This post concerns my supplement recommendations, meaning vitamins, minerals, and herbs that support your endocrine and hormonal system.
My holistic thyroid healing method is based on the research of Dr. Ray Peat and I have used his health principles to overcome my own hypothyroidism and hormonal imbalance.
What Vitamins Are Good For Thyroid Problems?
My vitamins, minerals, and herbs are important components of my thyroid supporting health method. Importantly, when you increase your thyroid function with thyroid replacement therapy — either a thyroid medication or one of the natural thyroid options I cover in my book — you will often experience vitamin and mineral deficiencies because your body needs more nutrients when the metabolic rate is higher, as your cells are running faster.
Biotin, vitamin B6, B5, selenium, and copper are extremely important for good thyroid function and hormonal balance in general, and these nutrients are among the vitamins and minerals which most often become deficient when starting on thyroid replacement therapy.
The liver is a crucial organ when it comes to good thyroid function and hormonal balance. The liver takes care of most of the activation of the thyroid hormone from the inactive storage hormone T4 to the active thyroid hormone T3, which is the hormone that controls cellular energy production. The liver also detoxifies the body from endotoxins from the intestine and it excretes excess estrogen. A sluggish liver leads to low thyroid function and estrogen dominance.
The liver needs large amounts of protein in addition to B-vitamins to function optimally. Therefore a B-complex product as well as certain protein powders can be good supplements to keep your liver and thus thyroid function up. Selenium is also important for the activation of the thyroid hormone from its inactive form (T4) to the active T3.
In addition, vitamins A, D and K are extremely protective and support both immune function, hormonal function, and thyroid function. Importantly, vitamin A needs to be dosed according to your thyroid function.
I also recommend certain herbs — among others, Cascara Sagrada. This herb is important for improving digestive function. I also recommend the use of selected probiotics to balance the gut bacteria.
In my Nutritional Supplements course you can see all the nutritional supplements I use in my hypothyroid treatment system. The course also provides information on the indication and dosage for use of each supplement. Many of the products can be purchased with my discount code which is provided in the course.
What Are Dangerous Nutritional Supplements?
Many common nutritional supplements on the market are not beneficial for your health and can actually promote inflammation and suppress thyroid function. It is important to use supplements correctly, and only use high-quality clean products, and only use supplements that support your health. In my Nutritional Supplements course you can learn more about which supplements you should definitely avoid. You can also learn more about anti-thyroid compounds in my Thyroid Recovery & Renewal course.
What Are The Best Clean And Pure Supplements?
When choosing vitamin, mineral, and herb products it is important to know that many supplements contain nano-sized particles as binders and fillers. These particles are dangerous to your health — they are supposed to be inert but actually they can produce inflammatory conditions in your body. I only recommend high-quality supplements without dangerous fillers and binders. All the supplements I present in my Nutritional Supplements course and my Thyroid Recovery & Renewal course are safe supplements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I boost my thyroid naturally?
To support low thyroid function naturally you need to combine four things: thyroid-supporting diet principles, specific vitamins and minerals, thyroid replacement therapy where needed, and natural hormonal support supplements that protect against stress and hormonal aging. No single supplement addresses all of these areas — it is the combination that makes the difference. I cover all four pillars in my Thyroid Recovery & Renewal course.
What vitamins are most important for thyroid problems?
Biotin, vitamin B6, B5, selenium, and copper are among the most important nutrients for thyroid function and hormonal balance. They are also the nutrients most likely to become depleted when you start thyroid replacement therapy — because a faster metabolism demands more of them. Vitamins A, D, and K are also extremely protective. Vitamin A in particular needs to be dosed carefully in relation to your thyroid function. I cover dosing and product recommendations in detail in my Nutritional Supplements course.
Why is the liver important for thyroid health?
The liver converts most of the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active form T3, which controls cellular energy production. It also detoxifies endotoxins from the gut and excretes excess estrogen. A sluggish liver leads directly to low thyroid function and estrogen dominance. Supporting the liver with adequate protein and B-vitamins is therefore an important part of any thyroid recovery programme.
Which supplements should I avoid with hypothyroidism?
Many common supplements on the market actually promote inflammation and suppress thyroid function. It is important to use only high-quality, clean products and to know which supplements support — rather than harm — your endocrine system. I go through exactly which supplements to avoid, and why, in my Nutritional Supplements course.
What makes a supplement clean and safe to use?
Many supplements contain nano-sized particles used as binders and fillers. These particles are supposed to be inert but can actually produce inflammatory conditions in the body. When I recommend a supplement I only recommend products that are free from dangerous fillers and binders. Product quality matters as much as the active ingredient itself.
