How Does A Calcium Deficiency Produce Inflammation?
A lack of calcium in your diet leads to disruption of the body's calcium metabolism and an increase in the production of a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). An elevated PTH is connected to inflammatory processes, therefore getting enough calcium is very important for preventing inflammation-related diseases.
How Does Calcium Influence Hormones?
A lack of calcium in the daily diet influences the general hormonal balance in a negative way, meaning a lack of calcium promotes hormonal disturbances such as:
- Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function)
- Elevation of inflammatory mediators
- Oestrogen dominance
- Progesterone deficiency
How Much Calcium Do I Need Per Day?
Around 2,000 mg of calcium per day is very useful for preventing inflammatory problems and hormonal disturbances. Many people do not get the necessary amount of daily calcium. Avoiding milk and dairy products is contributing to low calcium intake in the general population. In order to get enough calcium daily, dairy products should be included in your diet. What is parathyroid hormone (PTH) and how does it cause inflammation?
When dietary calcium is low, the parathyroid glands produce more PTH to pull calcium from the bones and maintain blood calcium levels. Chronically elevated PTH causes calcium to accumulate inside cells where it does not belong, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators such as arachidonic acid and prostaglandins. Over time this creates a persistent low-grade inflammatory state that contributes to thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic dysfunction.
Why does low calcium cause oestrogen dominance?
PTH and oestrogen have a mutually reinforcing relationship — elevated PTH raises oestrogen levels, and elevated oestrogen raises PTH. When dietary calcium is insufficient and PTH stays high, oestrogen accumulates relative to progesterone, producing symptoms of oestrogen dominance such as PMS, heavy periods, mood changes, and weight gain around the hips and thighs. Increasing calcium intake lowers PTH and helps restore the oestrogen-progesterone balance.
Can I get enough calcium without eating dairy?
Dairy is the most practical and bioavailable source of calcium, but calcium carbonate supplementation is an effective alternative. Some plant foods contain calcium — leafy greens, almonds, and fortified plant milks — but the absorption rate is generally lower due to oxalates and phytates. Those avoiding dairy entirely typically need to supplement to reach the 2,000 mg daily target that is optimal for hormonal and thyroid health. Does low calcium directly cause hypothyroidism?
Low calcium raises PTH, which in turn interferes with thyroid hormone production and the conversion of inactive T4 into active T3 — the usable form of thyroid hormone. PTH also increases serotonin and cortisol, both of which suppress thyroid function when elevated chronically. Is calcium carbonate a good supplement for this purpose?
Yes — calcium carbonate is inexpensive, widely available, and well absorbed when taken with food. It is one of the most effective forms of calcium for lowering PTH. The key is to spread doses across the day in amounts of around 500 mg at a time, as the gut cannot absorb large doses efficiently all at once. Adequate vitamin D intake is also important, as vitamin D is required for proper intestinal calcium absorption.
