Dr. Raymond Peat

1936 – 2022

Raymond Franklin Peat (1936–2022) was a distinguished American scholar with a Ph.D. in biology who devoted more than half a century to studying the complex relationships among nutrition, metabolism, hormones, and health.

Dr. Ray Peat’s approach places cellular energy production at the center of health, looking beyond individual symptoms to underlying factors that affect thyroid and hormonal function. Grounded in biochemistry, his principles aim to support lasting metabolic and hormonal health—not just short-term symptom relief.

The Importance of Cellular Energy

Dr. Ray Peat emphasized the importance of cellular energy in maintaining the body’s structure and function. He proposed that many diseases can arise when cellular energy production is out of balance with the demands placed on the body. In his view, insufficient cellular energy production can impair normal tissue and organ function and contribute to degenerative processes.

“Energy and structure are interdependent at every level.”

Thyroid Controls Energy

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. It produces the hormones T4 and T3. T4 is a storage hormone that can be converted into T3 when needed. T3 is the active thyroid hormone that controls the body’s energy production by regulating metabolic rate—how quickly the body converts food into energy.

Dr. Peat emphasized that optimal thyroid function is a cornerstone of cellular energy production and, by extension, overall health. He argued that many people experience a range of symptoms without realizing that low cellular energy and underactive thyroid function are root causes. People may try to address their symptoms one by one without recognizing that proper diagnosis and treatment of their thyroid issue is the true path to long-term health.
Throughout his extensive research, Dr. Peat explored topics such as optimal dietary practices to support thyroid and metabolic health, effective thyroid medications, the importance of natural anti-aging and anti-stress hormones such as progesterone and pregnenolone, and the use of light therapy and other lifestyle choices to sustain metabolic health and cellular energy production.
