# Thyroid Blood Tests: How to Interpret Them More Accurately

Many people experience symptoms of low thyroid function, such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss, and brain fog, even when their thyroid blood tests appear “normal.”

### TSH Blood Test

TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is usually the first test ordered when thyroid function is being evaluated. As thyroid function declines, TSH generally rises.

However, the normal TSH reference range is often too broad. In many countries, TSH levels up to 4 or even 5 are still considered normal. According to Dr. Ray Peat, low thyroid symptoms often begin to appear when TSH rises above 2.

### Why TSH Can Be Misleading

TSH is not always a reliable standalone indicator of thyroid function.

Stress hormones such as cortisol can suppress TSH.
